Dick's Valis and others

Slightly out of sync (just back from a week's holiday in the Lake District), here's my review of four later Philip K Dick novels, including his bug-eyed-religious VALISstory. Lots of people really rate that novel, you know. If you want to know what I think, you'll have to mosey over the strange horizon.

No, I can't deny that Valis is sort of boring, yet I also found it somewhat compelling. I dug the whole counterculture-y vibe, and even though I was aware of Dick's mental aberrations, the fact that they were being presented nominally in the form of a novel meant that I didn't feel called upon to treat them as a person's actual, earnest ideas about the nature of reality so much as an eccentric but interesting brand of worldbuilding.
