It was the book that made me realise why she is so beloved. It *feels* like a told story, rather than a written story. Re-reading it as an adult, like you I was appalled, but I could at the same time feel that I was being tucked up in bed and read to.
"...every written?" - is that the worst sentence ever committed to HTML by a critic?Actually I think her title Mr. Pinkwhistle Interferes might surpass it.I have fond memories of the Faraway books from when I was a youngster. At the time I lived in a remote Australian town where most trees were short and/or scrawny. The idea of a tree full of such wonders was especially enchanting.
Mike: quite right. Fixed now. It's the surname, above all, I'd say. It's hard not to read 'Mr Pinkwhistle' as somebody's wincing euphemism for their male member.Farah, yes: Lily seems to enjoy it. But usually what she enjoys I enjoy, whereas this is like fingernails down a blackboard to me.

Enid Blyton's Magic Faraway Tree used to be one of my favorite childhood books. I am also glad to inform you that I have published a book on Enid Blyton titled, The Famous Five: A Personal Anecdotage (www.bbotw.com).Stephen Isabirye
